Dear Editor,
I agree with a recent letter writer, please come to Hopkinton’s Special Town Meeting this Monday. This is a very significant project for this growing community, but it is not clear that it will accomplish all the stated and very desirable goals.
VHB, “As directed by the Town” (Letter dated 26 Nov) wrote me a two-page letter and, when all was said and done, “separated bicycle lanes have become so common” (Indeed, I have a data base of over 600), one would think it would have been possible, over the past two years, to find one featuring:
1. 30 driveways and intersections/mile
2. Two-way on one side of main road
3. With grades of over 6%
4. Only 4” curb and two feet of buffer between traffic and the bike lane along over 2,000 feet with significant grades
I point out, again, that, despite claims of safety, there has not been ONE bike lane, ANYWHERE, that we can look to as an inspiration for this bike lane proposal for Hopkinton. I have looked, and I know others have looked. If there was one example to be found, the proponents would have made it known. Instead we are left with, as a friend said, the illusion that this will be a safe place for Hopkinton families to ride.
There is a reason this has never been done before.
