Below is a recent letter to the editor regarding the downtown project and the upcoming special town meeting.
What used to be a quiet country downtown has turned into an urban traffic nightmare.
The Downtown Corridor Project started out years ago to be a plan to mitigate congestion in the downtown area. That goal is no longer realistic: there are more cars, more trucks, and more people discovering short cuts by using their GPS.
Straightening the Grove St./Main St. intersection to relieve traffic congestion is now only a dream. Anyone who presently thinks that you can safely bicycle through downtown Hopkinton definitely has a death wish. Why should "the Project" take private property to construct bicycle lanes that will give a false sense of security? Do any of the architects renderings show bicyclists riding side by side with 10 ton construction trucks or 18 wheelers?
The goals of the Downtown Corridor Project are no longer valid. Please stop the intrusive easements on the private property of Hopkinton residents and businesses.
Pave Main Street, fix the sidewalks, plant some trees and be done with it. Save us all some money and stress.
