Subject: Proposal for bike lanes in Hopkinton
Dear Ms Leavenworth,
I have asked, numerous times, to be shown examples, anywhere, of a bike lane similar to what has been proposed for Hopkinton. To wit:
• Urban
• Two-way
• Significant gradients
• A quantity of curb cuts and intersections (approximately 30) similar to the Hopkinton plan per mile.
In most cases I have not received even a minimus response from MassDOT, and, in one case, via VHB, six photos of two-way bike lanes, in urban areas, but with, at most, one curb cut, and none featuring anything other than flat terrain.
I eagerly anticipate learning of similar bike lanes in the US, or anywhere, and hope to hear from you soon.
Sincerely,
Edwin E Harrow
And individually to:
MassDOT
Michael Trepanier
Peter Sutton
David Shedd
Thomas Emerick
Jonathan Gulliver
VHB William DeSantis
Matthew Chase
Hopkinton DPW
John Westerling
Today I received the Return cards from all of the individuals listed, but for one.
I have a data base for approx 600 'protected' bike lanes in the US from People for Bikes, in Boulder, CO, but, unfortunately, there is no reference to topography in the data base. Of the 600, ~ 240 are two-way on one side of a road. About 100 of the 600 use parked cars as a buffer. I'm told that there are bike lanes on hills in Austin. I've made inquiries, but thus far have had no response.
I've also been given a MassHighway publication that notes, "...and experience minimal cross flow by motor vehicles." No number is specified for 'minimal'.

Yes, I think the next day, maybe two. I should have updated the post.

It's only been a week. (Albeit a long week...)

Today, as it's been 3 weeks with no informative response to my letter of 7 November, I have filed an FOIA request. I sincerely regret having the need to do this but, given the non-responses to my letters and emails over the bike-lane aspects of this project, I have been given no choice. FOIA.docx (16.8 KB)
